Letter to the Gov?

yea, I wrote a letter to the Gov. I doubt it will be read, or considered, but I wrote it anyway. I basically stated that I am fed up with the whole furlough deal and how the current proposal to ending furloughs involved teachers giving up the "planning days." Those of you who may not be in the education profession, let me tell you that those planning days are essential to the success of any school. To simply take them away from the teachers would be doing more harm than good, in the long run. Planning days are normally used to collaborate with peers about teaching and learning and how to better one's instruction in the classroom. It is not a day where teachers sit on their hindquarters all day eating donuts and shooting the bull. That is a common and ugly misconception.

I am really disliking the furloughs, but I am not willing to just give up "planning days" just to have more time with the students. Furthermore, from what I have read, the whole giving up planning days would equate to students coming to school ON the planning days, not ending the furlough Friday, which is what we are trying to do.

This is a really ugly situation in Hawaii, but I would still rather be employed that not employed and no income at all. I am grateful for my career, I just wish more people would value and understand that teaching and learning is indeed a REAL profession. Not some lowly fast food job.
