Phenomenal Week

I have had a phenomenal week teaching. I have really had something happen that made me realize (and this will be the only time I say it) I am much more exceptional as a professional educator than I could possibly imagine.

I don't like tooting my own horn, really I don't. But I have learned that I made heads turn and people rethink what they are doing in the classroom and how to evaluate teachers. Our school (well the district I work in) is working closely with The BERC group (http://www.bercgroup.com/index.php) and using this research method to help improve what we do in the classroom. Now, to give you all the background story:

The BERC group was coming to our school. I knew they were coming to do observations in the classrooms. I didn't know which classrooms, furthermore... I didn't care. Why should I? They are coming to observe what goes on in the classroom and use that information to change and develop themselves as a teacher, not bash and criticize what I am doing in the classroom. As a teacher it is really nerve-racking when you have people watching you... closely and taking notes off of what you are doing. Seriously it is. But, when I know people are coming, I still try to remain as focused as I can on the one aspect of the classroom I have the most control of: My classroom, my students, and the discussions I am having with them. That means, when people come to observe me... I see them come in only to assess if they are a threat to my students or not... that's it. If I come to the conclusion that they are not a threat, then I continue as scheduled.

So, I was aware that the group was coming. Didn't care when, didn't care what class. Next thing I knew... there were bodies walking into my classroom. Quick assessment: hmmm, one administrator.. ok, whatever. I need to regroup with my class for a closing meeting on a lesson we were working on.

Apparently, the founder of the BERC group is (no, has) changed one of the bullets he has on his assessment sheets because of what he witnessed in MY classroom! I never would even begin to think that something I did had that much of an impact. The lesson had gone so well that even I was impressed with the end results. The conversation with my students and where the whole discussion flew off to and how deep I got the students to really think about what they were saying was by far ;THE BEST FEELING IN THE WHOLE WORLD and the sheer fact that someone outside of the classroom witnessed it and had to make changes on something as big as an educator assessment tool.... that is AWESOME!!!!!

If I heard about this news from anyone else and there were no names, I would never guess it was from my class. But I was told today from my PRINCIPAL about it and she loves what I do in the classroom to begin with. She praised me with, "I guess if I want to see good teaching, I need to go to your room."

This is how my school week ended. I am ecstatic! I am loving my work and pumped to continue.
Thanks for reading.

That is so exciting! It's sad that more teachers aren't like you.

That comment from my principal alone motivated me even more. Don't worry I will continue what I am doing.
