Movie Review: Orphan

I have been going back and forth with the rating for this film. I was thinking to myself on how I really enjoyed this film and had to really think hard on why I would not give it 5 stars.

The film was surprisingly shocking. I had not seen the preview before going to see this film, so I barely knew what the synopsis of the film was. But after sitting and watching the 2 hour film, I was deeply impressed by the acting of the 10 year old, Isabelle Fuhrman. I believe that is what pushed me to give the film the 4.5 stars.

So why not give the film 5 stars? Well, the film starts out depressingly slow. I understand the importance of creating the back story. But I think it was building that back story that slightly killed the film. The opening scene just didn't really make sense to me. I believe there was a method to make that opening quick and to the point. However, with the slow opening that made snails look like sprinters, it did influence my decision on the rating.

However as the film progressed, you sit and continue to wonder, "what the hell is wrong this child." Of course all the evidence is there for the ending, but you just don't think about the ending. Finally when you arrive to the end, you learn the utmost unforeseeable truth of the child. If there is ever an "OMG" moment in the film, it would be the end.

While the film in categorized as a "horror" it is more like a psychological thriller. Walking out of the theater will leave an after taste of fear leaking down your spine.

Hope you enjoy it.

Was it gory? Deeply disturbing?

Although there were some gory scenes, it was not like a slasher film gory. Nor was it disturbing. It reminded me of a 90's film title, "Hand That Rocks the Cradle." It was on the same level as that with a very surprising twist at the end.

This may sound like a silly question, but were any animals hurt? I can't watch anything where animals die or are hurt at the cruel hand(s) of others...

Yes, there was one scene, so don't go see it.

While it sounds intriguing, based on the above conversation, I'll have to pass on this one.
